Friden was once a major American producer of typewriters and calculators.  Bought by Singer in 1965, the name was retired as a brand in 1974.  The company failed to develop pocket electronic calculators, and so lost out to the Japanese.  Apparently Friden thought consumers would be satisfied with portable calculators no larger than typewriters.  What else could anyone need?  A chicken in every pot, and a calculator on every desk!

Canada 1962.  The official handbook of present conditions and recent progress.  Ottawa:  Information Services Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics, 1962.
